Online course
Framed, not defined: an audio course on talking across the generations
We are framed by our generation, not defined by it. This audio course takes Alastair Greener's five principles for stronger intergenerational relationships and makes them a habit, one principle a week for five weeks, in short episodes you can listen to on the way to work.
Many of us find it easier to talk to people our own age. This course is about the conversations that take more effort: with the new starter, the senior colleague, the teenager at the kitchen table or the grandparent on the phone.
What you will practise
Alastair's five principles come from the final chapter of his book, and they work in both directions. They apply as much to a grandchild talking to a grandparent as to a manager talking to a new starter.
Week 1: Be curious
Ask about the other person's experience and what matters to them, before you decide you already know.
Week 2: Listen
Give people your full attention, let them finish, and think about what they meant before you reply.
Week 3: Don't judge
Notice the snap judgements we all make about someone's values or work ethic from their age, and ask another question instead.
Week 4: Don't compare
Retire "in my day" and "your generation", and look for what each generation brings.
Week 5: Accept we are all different
No generation's way of doing things is the right one. Respect the differences and adapt to the person in front of you.
How it works
- Short audio episodes on a private podcast feed, so the course plays in the podcast app you already use.
- A welcome before the first week, and a closing episode that turns the five principles into a plan for the month after.
- A one-page practice sheet with each episode, with one thing to try before the next.
- Stories from the Generationally Speaking podcast, where Alastair has talked with guests aged from 15 to 90.
Who it is for
Anyone who works or lives alongside people of other generations: team members, managers, parents and grandparents. It suits readers of the book who want to put it into practice, and audiences who have heard Alastair speak and want more.
The course deals with everyday conversations. Managers who want to change how a whole team works, from feedback to onboarding, will find that in The generational advantage.
