The generational advantage: a course for managers of multigenerational teams

A course for line managers that turns the ten workplace strategies in Alastair Greener's book into weekly habits. Agree a channel for each kind of message, give feedback at the rhythm each person has chosen, keep new starters past their first 90 days and mix teams on purpose.

In the 2023 study, more HR managers had changed their own style than said their organisation had. This course is a way for an organisation to take that step together, starting with the people who manage teams every day.

The six modules

  1. What the data says about your team

How thinking and behaviour at work vary with age, how to tell a pattern from a stereotype, and how to manage your own assumptions. 75% of UK workers say thinking and behaviour at work vary by age; 51% name communication styles as the main difference.

  2. The channel charter

Which channel for which message, agreed with the team and written down. 37% of Gen X send emails several times a day, against 10% of Gen Z.

  3. Feedback that fits

Feedback at the rhythm and in the form each person has chosen, followed by a written recap. 45% of Gen Z workers prefer weekly performance feedback, and 41% of UK workers receive less feedback than they want.

  4. The first 90 days

Onboarding that keeps the promises made at interview. 81% of Gen Z workers aged 18 to 27 want career advancement, against 20% of Baby Boomers and 33% of Gen X.

  5. Tangled teams and mutual mentoring

Mixing project teams on purpose, and pairing people of different ages to teach each other. 59% of Gen Z have used AI platforms such as ChatGPT, against 48% of Millennials and 13% of Baby Boomers.

  6. Keep people informed

Transparency from management, the harder conversations, and how to tell whether anything has changed.

How it works

  • Six video modules with Alastair, using the charts from his research and stories from the Generationally Speaking podcast.
  • A template with each module, from a team channel charter to an onboarding plan, so every manager finishes with something to use the following week.
  • Modules short enough to fit into a working week, for managers to take at their own pace.
  • Places for whole management teams, so everyone works from the same charter.

Who it is for

Line managers and team leaders, and the HR and learning teams who support them, in organisations where several generations work side by side. The course deals with communication and everyday management habits. It does not cover employment law.

Built from

The course follows the ten strategies in chapter 20 of Alastair's book, Generationally Speaking, and the work findings of two UK studies owned by his company, Present Yourself Ltd: Communication Habits and Preferences 2024, a survey of 4,067 people, and the Generations in the Workplace Study 2023, which asked more than 100 HR managers in Britain about the generations at work.
